Vdette Collaborates with Korean Radon Research Expert to Bring Advanced Indoor Air Protection to Market

From Scientific Research to Real-World Application: The Air Castle Radon-Care Air Purifier

Indoor air quality is about more than dust and everyday pollutants. Some of the most concerning indoor contaminants are invisible, difficult to detect, and often overlooked in daily life.

Radon is one such concern.

As awareness of indoor radon exposure continues to grow, the demand for more comprehensive indoor air management solutions is creating new opportunities for air purification technology.

Vdette is pleased to be involved in a collaborative project with South Korean indoor environment expert Professor Seung-Yeon Cho, bringing specialized knowledge of radon and indoor air quality into the development of a new generation of air purification products.

Working with an Expert in Radon Research

Professor Seung-Yeon Cho holds master's and doctoral degrees in nuclear chemistry from Purdue University in the United States, following his undergraduate studies in chemistry at Yonsei University.

After working as a research scientist at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in 1990, he joined Yonsei University in 1993, where he pursued research in nuclear reactions, indoor environmental science, and radon measurement and control.

Over the course of his career, Professor Cho has contributed to South Korea's national radon management initiatives and served in various advisory and professional roles, including work related to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), environmental health, and national standards.

His research and professional contributions include more than 150 academic papers and reports, as well as over 20 patents.

He has also devoted considerable effort to public radon education, awareness campaigns, and indoor environmental safety initiatives.

For Vdette, working with an expert who has spent decades studying indoor radon issues represents an opportunity to explore air purification solutions from a more specialized and practical perspective.

Why Radon Deserves More Attention in Indoor Air Management

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released through the decay of uranium in soil and rocks. It can enter buildings through foundations, cracks, and other openings, potentially accumulating indoors.

Unlike visible dust or ordinary household pollutants, radon cannot be detected through smell or sight.

South Korea's 2018 radon mattress incident brought considerable public attention to the issue. It also highlighted a broader concern: indoor environmental risks are not limited to one particular product or building material.

Homes, offices, schools, and other enclosed environments all deserve appropriate indoor air quality assessment.

As Professor Cho has emphasized, understanding and managing indoor radon should become part of everyday environmental awareness rather than something people only consider after a problem is discovered.

Air Castle: A Different Approach to Indoor Air Purification

One of the outcomes of this collaboration is Air Castle, a radon-care air purifier introduced by BrightHome in South Korea.

Unlike conventional air purifiers that primarily focus on airborne dust and particulate matter, Air Castle incorporates a specialized multi-stage filtration structure designed to capture ultrafine particles and airborne radon progeny.

Its key features include:

  • Four-stage filtration structure: Designed to capture ultrafine particles, including airborne radon progeny.

  • Specialized electrostatic collection: Incorporates a pre-biased copper mesh filter and a dust collection unit.

  • Washable filtration components: Designed to reduce the need for frequent replacement of disposable filters, with cleaning generally recommended at approximately six-month intervals depending on actual usage.

  • Air quality monitoring: Equipped with a particulate matter sensor and automatic airflow adjustment.

  • Multiple operating levels: Provides different airflow settings to accommodate different indoor environments.

An important technical distinction should be made: Air Castle is designed to capture airborne radon progeny and particulate matter. It does not directly remove radon gas or replace established radon mitigation methods.

For spaces with elevated radon concentrations, proper radon measurement, source control, and ventilation remain essential. Air filtration can be considered as a supplementary approach to indoor particulate management.

This distinction is important when developing responsible and technically credible indoor air solutions.

A Successful Introduction to the South Korean Market

Air Castle made its first public appearance on South Korea's Wadiz crowdfunding platform in August 2026.

The campaign achieved:

  • 323% of its funding target

  • 89 supporters

  • KRW 16,181,600 in total funding

The campaign ran from August 3 to August 19, 2026, demonstrating consumer interest in a more specialized approach to indoor air purification.

For the project team, this launch represents more than the introduction of another air purifier. It is an example of how specialized environmental research can be translated into a product designed for everyday use.

Bringing Research, Engineering and Manufacturing Together

At Vdette, we believe that the next stage of air purification development will involve more than improving conventional filtration performance.

Different indoor environments present different challenges. Fine particles, chemical pollutants, biological contaminants, and specialized environmental concerns may require different technical approaches.

Working with experts from related scientific fields helps us better understand these requirements and explore practical product solutions.

With experience in air purification R&D, OEM/ODM manufacturing, and electrostatic purification technologies, Vdette continues to work with partners to develop products for different applications and market requirements.

The Air Castle project is one example of how collaboration between scientific expertise and product development can create new possibilities for the indoor air purification industry.

Better indoor air begins with a better understanding of the environment we live in.

At Vdette, we look forward to continuing to work with industry experts and partners to turn specialized air quality requirements into practical purification solutions.
